Elias Group Environmental Law
Seth Davis
Seth Davis brings to the Elias Group more then 30 years of front-line legal experience and more then 25 years of cutting edge work in the environmental field. He is recognized as one of the country’s leading specialists in Superfund and hazardous waste site remediation, and in counseling clients on environmental aspects of corporate transactions. He has practiced both as a partner in law firms and as a member of corporate legal departments; he brings the strengths of both perspectives to his clients’ problems.

Seth provides advice on a variety of environmental issues to clients in utility, chemicals, manufacturing and real estate fields. He regularly counsels clients on the effect of environmental regulation on business and real estate transactions such as mergers, acquisitions, and sales and refinancing of real property, and represents clients in environmental enforcement proceedings and cleanup activities. He often conducts environmental audits and due diligence reviews for transactional purposes, and counsels corporate clients on development of environmental programs.

Prior to joining the Elias Group, Seth was a partner and chair of the environmental department at Huber Lawrence & Abell in New York. There he worked extensively with a variety of environmental issues relating to restructuring of the electric industry. He has been involved in auctions, dispositions and acquisitions of generation assets, and in the electric utility industry’s response to efforts at enforcing new source review provisions of the Clean Air Act. Prior to Huber Lawrence, Seth was a partner in Fink Weinberger PC in New York.

After stints as an associate at Patterson Belknap and Rosenman Colin, Seth got his initial experience in environmental law as in-house counsel in the law departments of Celanese Corporation and Revlon, Inc., where he was responsible for all aspects of environmental, health and safety law. He represented Celanese in the negotiation of the settlement of the Bluff Road site in South Carolina, one of the first multi-party settlements under the Superfund law. He was involved in several other Superfund sites at both companies. Seth dealt with a wide range of environmental issues in a complex set of corporate transactions both before and after the acquisition of Revlon by Ronald Perelman.

Seth graduated from the Harvard Law School in 1975, and from Wesleyan University, summa cum laude, in 1972. He was awarded a Junior Fellowship at Wesleyan’s Center for the Humanities and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.
Seth is a Council Member of the American Bar Association Section on Environment, Energy and Resources and former Clair of that Sections Committees on Environmental Transactions and Brownfields and on Site Remediation. He is an Adjunct Professor at Pace University Law School, where he teaches a course on environmental law in commercial transactions. He lectures frequently at continuing legal education programs.

Seth lives in Croton-on-Hudson, New York with his wife and family. He is active in local affairs, having served as Chairman of the Village Planning Board and as frequent advisor to the Village Board on environmental matters. He is an avid fan of classical music, opera, ballet, and the New York Yankees. He serves on the boards of Musica Sacra of New York and Destination Imagination of New York. Seth also achieved some measure of fame as a 4-time winner on TV’s Jeopardy! in 1991.
